This is it, my first day at Degrassi, no one knows who I am... perfect. Variel thought to herself. She had her bright orange hair in floppy pigtails today, as she expected she would on most days now. She walked through the doors confidently and searched the walls of the hallway for what she wanted, she didn't even want to go to her first class before she got this over with.
Variel finally found it taped outside the gym, that should've been obvious she thought to herself. She pulled out a pen from her hot pink purse and scribbled her name onto the Power Squad try out list.
"Ariel S., now is it?" a dark girl with poofy hair asked her from behind.
"Yup, that's me!" Variel told her, trying to be as enthusiastic as possible. It seemed to work because the girl held out her hand and smiled.
"Chantay Black... I like your outfit Ariel, it's very, peppy... can't wait to see you at tryouts" She told her while shaking her hand.
"Can't wait to be there!" Variel replied, waving as Chantay walked away. When she was out of site she twirled in her blue skirt and adjusted her gold colored bracelets. And as she bent down to tie her bleach white sneakers she smiled to herself slyly, it's working...

Iris walked into the building and took a deep breathe. She was not one bit happy to be back in school. While walking over to her locker she remembered the eventful summer that was now in her past. She reached for her books and thought of him. Her summer romance. She hadn't told him that she was in high school when they met in L.A. on her family vacation. He was 23, and he assumed she was around his age. She looked older than she actually was, so it was understandable.
She slammed her locker closed and walked to her first class, chemistry. She walked in thinking of Craig, and what they'd done that summer. She thought she was falling on love with him. They left before she had the chance to tell him, though. She put her books down, and slid into a desk. She sat next to the new guy. She looked up to see the back of her teachers head. He was a new teacher this year, and everyone was dying to know who he was. So far, he had dark, curly hair, and was probably 6'2". He was writing his name on the chalk board. He was in the middle of writing it, so his name right then was Mr. Man. Whatever, she thought. She looked down and started doodling on her notebook.
Mr. Man started taking attendance, and like every first day of school, the names were getting butchered. He slowly made his way down to the M's. "Jake Martin, Anya McPherson, Owen Milligan-" He stopped in his tracks. She knew her name was next, but why didn't her say it? It's not like "Iris Mitchell" is hard to say. She pursed her lips. By then, she'd looked up to the chalk board to find out the rest of his name. Mr. Manning. That was Craig's last name. She wondered if there was any relation. She looked up to see the hazel eyes that she'd been looking into all summer staring back at her. Craig sputtered out, "Iris Mitchell." Iris squeaked out, "Here." Her summer fling was now her teacher. This will be interesting, she thought.

"D-E-G-R-A-S-S-I!" Variel shouted before jumping into a hurkey and landing in the splits. She kept her arms up and a wide smile plastered on her face until the upper class men told her to stand up, and even then she still made sure they could always see her teeth.
"Wow, that was really amazing! I can't believe we haven't heard of you before. How long have you been taking gymnastics?" Chantay asked her, a similar smile on her face.
"Not long, I just started over the summer, I guess I'm a natural!" Variel told her, doing that cheerleader thing, where even when they're complimenting their selves they still sound humble for some strange reason. That made Chantay give the other girl at the table a suspicious look, but Variel could tell she was trying to hide the glance from her freshman self. The other girl just rolled her eyes and looked back at Variel.
"It really was wonderful. Some of that stuff can be hard to learn. I'm Holly J, the captain of the power squad, we'll definitely be considering you Ariel!" Holly J offered her hand to Variel, shook, and then gestured for the next girl to come in. Variel smiled back and skipped out of the gym. She didn't notice at all when a curly haired boy followed her back to her locker so she jumped when she first saw him. He smiled shyly and rubbed the back of his neck.
"So, ummm, you're new here right?"
"Yeah, this is only my second day." Variel answered off-handedly. This guy seemed kind of weird, wasn't very attractive, and she really wanted enough time to go to the store before she went home.
"Cool, I'm Riley." He smiled at her and held out her hand. That's when she noticed the gold football emblem on his jacket. Her eyes suddenly lit up and when she went to shake his hand, she laid her other hand on his arm and held it there just a little too long.
"Ariel" She told Riley, looking up into his eyes. She slung her bag over her shoulder and looked back at him as she walked away, and she knew where his eyes lingered once she turned her head.
-------------------------------------------------- "What took you so long, Freak?" Iris asked her little sister as she walked through their front door, holding a bag from the Salvation Army with cheap black hair dye in it and some ratty black clothes in it.
"You probably mean 'why did you come so soon?' I know how it is, Little Miss Perfect." Variel snorted at her older sister.
"Yeah, and you're going to stay the only one who knows how it is." Iris told her, staring daggers at her.
"Please, like I want people to know I'm related to you either? Get over yourself." Variel snapped back.
"What's with the get-up?"
"Well, you don't need to know about this" Variel said, tossing her bag into her small room that was attached to the kitchen "And I'm the newest member of the power squad, didn't you hear?!" Variel finished, putting on her peppy face for her sister to see.
"Convincing. Like it's going to last though" Iris said, rolling her eyes, then added under her breath "You look like an idiot..."
Variel just stuck her tongue out at her sisters back and marched into her room, locking the door behind her. She hated explaining even the little things to her older sister, but she had to make sure to get away from her parents before they got home, that was something that was worth trying to avoid.

Later that night, Iris got a call from Craig.
She sighed, and answered, "Hello?"
He started in, "Can you please explain to me what's going on?"
"I think it's pretty self-explanatory. You are my teacher now." She simply said.
He huffed, "This is going to be so weird. I can't believe this is happening..."
"But it is, and we just have to deal with it. What do you think we should do?" She asked.
"I think we should just act like none of it ever happened when we're at school. Like we've never met before today. Then outside of school, we can have a sort of secret relationship. If you're up for it, of course. I mean, i can't be seen hooking up with one of my students." He sounded like he had it all planned out.
"Well, i guess that could work. It'll suck having to keep us a secret though." Iris whined.
---------------------------------------------------NEXT DAY---------------------------------------------------------- Iris casually walked in to her chemistry class, and took a seat in the front row. She told herself that it was completely normal, she would've taken a front row seat even if her boyfriend wasn't the teacher.
She doodled things like stars and swirlies on her notebook while she was waiting for the bell to ring. She felt a finger poking her shoulder. She looked up from her notebook to see a attractive, lightish haired boy grinning at her. He looked at him quizzically at said, "What do you want, Jake?" He was the new kid this year, but Iris remembered him. She sat next to him on the first day, and their names were close on the attendance list.
He smiled, somewhat nervously, and said, "Well, you sat next to me yesterday. I was kinda hoping you'd grace me with the honor again."
She was taken aback. What was this all about? Did Jake like her? Or was he just trying to be friendly, in a creepy, flirty way? Either way, she blushed. She looked back up at Craig to see if he was watching, but he was looking down at his computer. She had to act normal. She couldn't tell Jake no, because she had to reason to. He didn't know she had a boyfriend.
She looked back up at Craig one more time, and collected her things and followed Jake towards the back of the room, to a seat he had saved for her.

Variel was pulling a book out of her locker when Riley walked up to her. He looked a little nervous, a little sweaty, gross... Variel thought to herself
"Sooo, ummm, Ariel, I was wondering if..." He trailed off and didn't finish. Then quickly he turned around and glanced at someone with spiky black hair who was standing near the office. It was literally like a cartoon when he turned back to Variel, his fists clenched, his chin went up, and his chest seemed to stick out two feet farther than usual. She was about to ask him what his question was, but he grabbed her arm and looked her square in the eyes.
"I'm taking you out on a date tonight Ariel." Riley stated matter-of-factly. Under any normal circumstances (which Variel never really experienced) she would've thought this to be rude, arrogant, and would've said no immediately, but in this case... Perfect... she practically purred to herself. And even though she would have loved to be assertive right back at him, she had to keep up her innocent, freshman, cheerleader routine.
"What time will you pick me up?" Variel asked him in an enthusiastic tone, popping her bubble gum and twirling her hair around her finger.
"Eight, be ready, wear something nice." Riley told her with a nod, then walked past her to his next class.
"Can't wait!" She yelled at his back and let her hand flourish up in an over-excited wave. Well, he's weird, and a jerk, but he's also a weird football playing jerk... He'll have do for now Variel thought to herself, slightly irritated. She popped her gum one last time and walked to her next class.

Variel burst into Iris's room, wearing a strapless bra and a black mini skirt. She sprinted to the closet, and started throwing clothes off the hangers.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" Iris freaked out.
"I need that sexy one shoulder red tank top shirt thing. I have a date tonight." Variel explained calmly.
"STOP THROWING MY STUFF EVERYWHERE! I know exactly where it's at." Iris walked over to her armoire, and pulled open the bottom drawer. She rifled through her "sexy" things, and pulled out the top Variel wanted.
"Thank you." Variel said curtly.
"And who exactly are you going on a date with?"
"Riley. You know, curly hair, weird looking, kind of aggressive." Variel explained.
"I know who he is, but I thought her was..... Never mind. Why is a senior stooping so low, and going out with a niner?"
"I DON'T KNOW. But it fits in with my look. So, I'm going. See ya!" Variel walked out, and Iris heard the front door slam shut.

----------------EARLIER THAT DAY------------------------ The power squad was sitting in a circle in the middle of the gym, stretching before practice. It was quiet, which Variel found odd, but it was also the perfect time to give them her "exciting" news.
"Sooo..." she started, reaching for her left foot "I have a date tonight!" The other girls looked around at each other, then suddenly started clapping and grinning like idiots.
"That's great Ariel! I knew they wouldn't be able to resist you, who is it?" Holly J asked her, playfully hitting her arm.
"His name's Riley, he's a senior, AND he's on the football team!" Variel responded in a perky voice. They all looked around at each other again then, but the moment was over quickly and Variel decided that whatever dirt they had, she really didn't want to know about it. They all told her how great that was and then started to talk about all the boys in their lives. First dates, turned to first kisses, which turned to first times, which turned into second and third, and twentieth times, and not always with the same guy. Variel felt her brow begin to sweat and she couldn't stop looking at her palms What?! she thought to herself all the cheerleaders at my old school were perky and clueless, not whores!
"Well, there was this one time me and K.C." a blonde girl named Jenna began, and as the story progressed Variel had to restrain herself from gagging. THAT'S JUST UNSANITARY! She screamed in her head.
"Excuse me!" Variel got out quickly and bolted toward the bathroom. She wiped the sweat from her forehead and splashed her face with cold water. Until yesterday, the farthest she had ever gotten with a guy was eye contact. If all the guys at Degrassi were the same as what the girls were talking about, Variel knew what she had to do with Riley tonight... She gripped the edge of the sink tightly and thought to herself Dear God, is this what panic attacks feel like? She spent the entire practice in the bathroom, pacing and sweating, sweating and pacing, and crying, just a little. Finally she looked at herself in the mirror and sucked in her breath.
"Ariel, this is going to be a night of firsts, get over yourself. It's time to give up the innocent act." Variel told herself sternly, then threw open the door and stomped through the gym, out of the school, past the bus stop, and all the way home. ----------------------------------------- Variel checked herself in the mirror quickly after putting on her sister's shirt and grimaced. Red low cut shirt check black mini skirt check high heels check strapless bra, black underwear check three pounds of mascara and pink lip gloss check jewelry check, lack of dignity...
"Check" she said out loud "Jesus I look like a slut..." and with that she stuck out her chest and walked out to Riley's car, slamming the door behind her. ----------(Riley's POV)------------------ He sat in front of Ariel's address in his old car at exactly eight o clock sharp. He heard the door slam from the house and hurriedly wiped the beads of sweat from his upper lip.
"I'm sorry Zane... but please let this work." He whispered to himself as Ariel approached his car. He had been anxious all day, waiting for their date. He was done being the laughing stalk of the whole school, the "gay" football player, he had to prove his manhood somehow. Manipulate a clueless Niner... check.
"Wow." was all Riley said as she got into the car. She had had to bend over to get in, and sitting down her skirt was about 6 inches shorter, gay or not, if you were a guy, you would have to try not to notice that. -------------(Variel's POV)-------------------- Variel practically had to snap him out of trance to get him to start driving, she hated the feeling of his eyes on her chest, and then her legs and then back up, but obviously that was a good sign it was working. So she sucked it up and let him look at her, before driving (very distractedly) to the movie theater for their date.
He paid for everything, so at least he had one good trait. They were going to see some horror flick Of course... Variel thought to herself, rolling her eyes inwardly. The two of them sat in the very last row, and as soon as the movie started Riley slowly put their middle arm rest down and scooted uncomfortably close to her. He lazily threw his arm around her shoulder, and laid his other hand on her thigh, then started to blow in her ear.
Seriously, do girls actually like this?! Variel thought to herself, she had to fight just to keep down her lunch. His breath smelled like chili dogs and breath mints. He didn't even bother to brush his teeth! But she had to do this, so she bucked up, smiled at him, and put her hand on his knee while leaning into him a little more. And suddenly, just like that, he was kissing her. He didn't just stop with one, it was full blown right from the start. Variel didn't know if he was just over zealous or if this was what it was actually like, God, I thought when they said "stuck his tongue down my throat" they were joking! She couldn't help but think. ------------------------------- The movie had ended forty five minutes ago and they were parked a block away from Variel's house.
"That was great." Riley told her, hitting her back side as she got out of the back seat of his car. She couldn't speak, so she just winked and shut the door. As soon as she heard the car start, she stopped walking, ripped off her heels, and ran in the direction of her house. The tears were streaming down her face as she shut her front door behind her and slid down it, onto the floor.
"I think I'm going to be sick" She sobbed to herself, her head in her hands. Why hadn't she just lied and said she did, she couldn't stop herself from thinking that that was a huge mistake. ---------------------------- "I can't believe I just did that" Riley shouted, banging his head against the steering wheel. Nothing had changed at all, and he knew this was one of biggest mistakes of his life.
